Accidents happen to the best of us. When you have a red wine spill on your carpet, it can seem like a daunting task to remove it, but don’t panic!

The Virgin Carpets and Flooring team has all the tips you need to get rid of those pesky red wine stains and make your carpet look as good as new.

Keep in mind that before you follow our tips consult the manufacturer of your carpet! Every carpet is different and may require special care. This information can usually be found online on the manufacturer website.

Material List

remove red wine stain from carpet

Here’s some of the materials you will need to remove red wine stains:

  • White vinegar
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Paper towels
  • Sponge
  • Club soda
  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Clean cloth
  • Carpet stain remover (see step 4)

1. Blot (Don’t Rub!)

First, focus on lifting as much of the stain as possible with water and a dry, clean cloth or paper towel. Make sure to apply just enough water to dilute the red wine stain while also not spreading it further.

Blot the red wine stain with the cloth to remove as much liquid as possible. Do not rub the stain! This will only spread it and make it harder to remove.

To follow this up, you can pour club soda onto the stain with a clean sponge and blot it dry. Some suggest that the carbonation in club soda can help to lift the stain.

If you’re still seeing the stain, don’t worry! We have more steps to remove it.

2. Apply White Vinegar and Dishwashing Soap to Remove Red Wine Stains

Mix a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar to two cups of water. Apply directly to the stain. Use your sponge to soak up the liquid.

Repeat this process until the stain is no longer visible. This will usually do the trick.

3. Apply Hydrogen Peroxide and Dishwashing Soap to Remove Red Wine Stains

If the stain is still proving to be difficult, you can try a hydrogen peroxide and dishwashing liquid solution. Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with one part dishwashing liquid and apply it to the area with a sponge. Blot until dry.

Note: Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent. It can lift the color on your carpet. We do not recommend this method if you are treating a dark or colored carpet. Also, do not use this method on wool or silk carpets as it may damage the fibers!

4. Apply Baking Soda to Remove Red Wine Stains

This step is optional, but if you find the red wine stain is still visible, you can try applying baking soda to the area. Make a paste with baking soda and water, then apply it to the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes, then vacuum it up.

5. Using Carpet Stain Remover Products to Remove Red Wine Stains

In the event none of these steps have done the trick, you can try a carpet stain remover product. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product label.

Some of the top carpet stain cleaning products include:

  • Resolve Carpet Cleaner
  • Woolite Oxy Deep Stain and Odor Remover
  • OxiClean Max Force Stain Remover Spray

5. Call a Professional Carpet Cleaner to Remove Red Wine Stains

If all else fails and the stain is still visible, your best bet is to call a professional carpet cleaner. They will have the experience and equipment necessary to remove even the most stubborn stains.
